College of Business Administration Launches the Skov Essay Competition on Business Ethics

January 23, 2014

The College of Business Administration has launched an annual essay contest for El Paso’s high school students.  Each year the College’s Center for Multicultural Management and Ethics will be asking El Paso area high school students to participate in the Skov Essay Competition on Business Ethics by writing about a topic that challenges them to consider how ethical issues relate to business.  This year’s topic is: How can we contribute to shaping ethical business practices in our community?

The College of Business Administration created the competition as a way to consistently interact with the community and positively influence the ethical climate in the El Paso region.  Primary funding for the competition has been generously provided by Robert E. and Jacqueline Skov.  Given the excitement from the business community surrounding the competition, the College was also able to secure additional funding from the United Bank of El Paso del Norte, thanks to the commitment of Les Parker, the bank’s chairman, president, and chief executive officer.

For the first-annual competition, the College has invited senior students from seven of El Paso’s high schools to participate—Austin, Bel Air, Bowie, Chapin, Coronado, El Paso, and Jefferson.  The competition will monetarily award six participants for their work, with cash prizes that range from $50 to $1000 (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, plus three honorable mentions).  Student essays are due February 3, 2014, after which they will be anonymously scored by a team of College of Business Administration faculty.  The participating schools and competition winners will be notified by March 31, 2014 and the First-Annual Skov Essay Competition on Business Ethics Awards Ceremony will take place during the University of Texas at El Paso College of Business Administration graduation ceremony in May 2014.
