College of Business Administration Earns Top Spot in Annual Hispanic Business Rankings

The University of Texas at El Paso’s College of Business Administration and College of Engineering were rated among the best schools in the country for Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine in its annual rankings released Aug. 28.

The College of Business Administration (CoBA) was rated No. 1 for the third year in a row and the College of Engineering earned a No. 3 ranking, its eighth straight year in the top five of the magazine’s list that rates the effectiveness of the country’s universities to attract Hispanic students.

”As The University of Texas at El Paso continues its pursuit of Tier One (national research university) status, we are extremely proud that Hispanic Business magazine has recognized our College of Business Administration and our College of Engineering graduate programs in their annual rankings, which serve as a testament to our mission of access and excellence,” said Cheryl B. Torsney, Ph.D., UTEP’s senior vice provost.

The magazine based its findings on several factors: diversity in percent of Hispanic student enrollment, percent of Hispanic faculty members, percent of degrees conferred to Hispanics and the progressive programs aimed at increasing enrollment of Hispanic students. The numbers were from 2011 data.

The College of Business Administration enrolled 369 graduate students and 224 (60.7 percent) were Hispanic, and 57.4 percent of the M.B.A. degrees earned (78 of 136) were presented to Hispanics.

“This national recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff, and to the quality of our students,” said Steve Johnson, associate dean of CoBA. “Together they provide the necessary ingredients to achieve this acknowledgment.”

Other ranked schools were the University of California, Berkeley, at No. 2, Yale University at No. 9 and Stanford University at No. 10. Other Texas schools were UT Austin at No. 4 and UT San Antonio at No. 7.

CoBA is the only regional business school in the El Paso-Juárez region to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Fewer than 5 percent of the business schools worldwide have earned that designation.

In the College of Engineering, 144 of the 368 students enrolled in its graduate program (39.1 percent) are Hispanic, and 83 of the 188 postgraduate degrees (44.1 percent) were earned by Hispanics.

“This perennial acknowledgement of the quality of our graduate programs is a testament to the high-quality faculty and students we have and continue to attract to our programs, as well as to our outstanding staff that support those faculty and students,” said Richard Schoephoerster, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering.

The rankings come on the heels of a No. 12 ranking earlier this week from Washington Monthly, a bi-monthly magazine founded in 1969 and based in our nation’s capital that covers politics, government, culture and the media. Its list showcases institutions that are effective and inexpensive.

Washington Monthly’s rankings were based on a combination of social mobility, research production, commitment to service and cost-effectiveness of degree completion. UTEP ranked No. 1 in the sub-category of social mobility, which the magazine described as recruiting and graduating low-income students.
