Beta Alpha Psi Chapter Takes 1st Place at National Conference

September 22, 2009

A group of UTEP Business accounting students attended the 2009 Beta Alpha Psi Annual Conference held this past August in Brooklyn, NY. A team composed of Rosa Villa, Susi Barron and Nadia Abugalyon took 1st place in the Best Practices Competition in the category of Developing Life Skills: Helping Others Succeed.

The team designed a complete program of financial literacy for women living in shelters. They then presented workshops on various financial topics (credit card use, bankruptcy options, bank account reconciliations, etc.) to women in three different homeless shelters around El Paso.

In addition, they provided free tax return preparation for the women. In all, the chapter of 25 students has contributed more than 350 hours of community service to the homeless shelters.

A total of 13 Beta Alpha Psi members from UTEP attended the conference. While in Brooklyn, the team spent a day of community service helping to clean up and maintain Red Hook Park–one of the largest and most treasured parks in New York.
