October 14, 2009

AMBA GraduateThe largest group of Accelerated Master’s of Business Administration students at The University of Texas at El Paso to date graduated Friday from the 24-month program.

Fifty-three Accelerated MBA (AMBA) students participated in the graduation and hooding ceremony at the Wyndham El Paso Airport Hotel.

The AMBA started as a pilot project for Boeing employees in 1999. It was so successful that it was offered to the region’s professionals in 2001.

“The ongoing success of this MBA program has paved the way for the creation of the new UTEP Graduate Business Center in Downtown El Paso,” said Laura Uribarri, director of MBA programs for UTEP’s College of Business. “It has also spurred the development of new programs that will begin in 2010, such as the Executive MBA and the International MBA.”

During the spring 2007 semester, the College of Business Administration announced that it would begin a new AMBA cohort in the fall. The response to the recruitment efforts was so strong that the College started two new AMBA cohorts.

The graduating cohorts are comprised of working professionals from El Paso, Juárez and Southern New Mexico. The students’ professional backgrounds include finance, marketing, engineering, computer network administration, health care administration, education, pharmacy and construction.

The AMBA students had the opportunity to participate in the first MBA International Research Course organized by the College. Students traveled to Frankfurt, Germany and Prague, Czech Republic to complete their comparative business research projects.

The AMBA is a fast-track MBA option designed for working professionals. Students attend class twice a week and complete the 48-hour curriculum one course at a time in six-week increments. The intense program allows students to complete their MBAs in the same two-year period as a full-time MBA student.

The recent graduates are the fifth and sixth cohort to complete the accelerated program.

The MBA program is currently accepting applications for the Spring Semester. For more information, go to mba.utep.edu or call (915) 747-7379.
