Date: April 23, 2010
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Location: Business Room 309
Dr. Robert Lawson will be presenting on his research activities this afternoon. He is Director of the Economic Freedom Initiative, an Associate Professor at Auburn University, and Co-Director of the Center for International Finance and Global Competitiveness at Auburn University.
The Economic Freedom of the World index is a project that resulted from a series of conferences involving Michael Walker of the Fraser Institute and Nobel Laureates Milton Friedman, Gary Becker, and Douglass North. In 1997 James Gwartney, Robert Lawson, and Walter block constructed the first index measuring economic freedom. It is now constructed annually for over 140 countries across the world. The importance of economic freedom for economic development has been demonstrated in many empirical studies. Dr. Lawson will discuss economic freedom, how it is measured, and the relationship that it has with GDP per capita, economic growth, and overall wellbeing across nations.
